Higher doses, equivalent to approximately 3591 mg, were associated with nephrotoxicity; however, in a phase I study, subjects were given doses of 2000 mg to 5000 mg per day and showed no evidence of adverse events or signs of toxicity. Based on Level B evidence of possible interactions (non-randomized clinical trials), caution should be exercised when combining quercetin with certain prescription drugs. Large amounts of dietary quercetin have not been associated with any adverse effects, which may be due to low bioavailability in food and rapid metabolism and elimination.
